History
The history of postal operations between Sweden and Finland traces back to the Åland Islands.
An island nestled among islets and rocks. Here, dedicated farmers once served as the backbone of mail transportation, transporting mail across the sea. As time progressed, steamers gradually assumed the responsibility of mail transportation, eventually relieving the farmers of their duties by 1911.
Since then, postal operations have evolved significantly. Today, mail delivery relies on ferries and planes, yet it remains deeply rooted in the legacy of those resilient farmers. Åland continues to hold significance not only as a geographical focal point for postal transport between Finland and Sweden but also as a place where traditional aspects of postal services, such as letter and newspaper delivery, have their own unique story.
Our operations have always evolved with the times. Even during the peak of letter and magazine delivery, we actively provided packaging and delivery services, among other things. At the same time, we developed logistics solutions for the emerging e-commerce market. Packaging and distribution responsibilities remain a crucial aspect of Åland’s society.
As the market changed, the importance of letter and magazine delivery gradually waned. As a result, we changed our operations to meet new needs. This transition marked our growing commitment to delivering logistics services to online retailers across Europe.
In 2019 Åland Postdecided to expand its e-commerce logistics outside Åland
This new direction led to the creation of Axla Logistics in Vantaa, strategically located at the heart of excellent transport connections and logistics. Guided by our commitment to support fast-growing e-commerce companies in Finland and beyond, Axla Logistics leverages our extensive experience and expertise to meet the evolving needs of the market.
The transition period was characterized by a sense of purpose, and the small successes accumulated eventually led to the successful expansion of our operations. This achievement is thanks to our dedicated team of 200 committed individuals on Åland and in Vantaa, whose efforts made this change possible.
At the same time, the expansion established our position as the leading expert in e-commerce logistics in Finland.
Now, we aim even higher. We are setting new standards for logistics services in Finland, where every process is optimized for efficiency and sustainability, and customer experience is always our number one priority.
A significant step in this direction is our upcoming move to a new logistics property equipped with AutoStore™ technology in Tuusula. This warehouse, located in the Sula industrial area, will become the heart of our evolving logistics operations. Here, automation and deep integrations with customer systems will enable even faster, more accurate, and more sustainable logistics flows.
Our goal is to ensure that every stage of our business is characterized by efficiency, sustainability, and excellent customer experiences. In our new delivery center, we are making a groundbreaking investment in automation with a modern WMS and AutoStore™ system. By investing in advanced automation and newly built, sustainability-certified facilities, we are setting new standards in the industry. We believe that our exceptional focus on sustainability, combined with our commitment to development, will establish us as a leading expert in e-commerce logistics.
